You’re probably aware of Alfa Romeo’s reputation for creating powerful luxury vehicles with an Italian flair, but who owns Alfa Romeo? Since 2007, Alfa Romeo has been owned by Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles (FCA). But is Alfa Romeo Italian? Of course! Just because owners may have changed hands over time doesn’t mean the brand isn’t Italian anymore. In fact, every Alfa Romeo car, crossover, and SUV offers Italian luxury, performance, and design.
Furthermore, the brand retains its distinct style with models like the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, Giulia, and Stelvio, as well as the famed Quadrifoglio lineup with its high-performing engines. So where is Alfa Romeo from? Read on to learn more about Alfa Romeo history, brand identity, and today’s models!
The story of Alfa Romeo began in 1910 when Cavalier Ugo Stella became a shareholder of an Italian automotive plant. The plant, located in Milan, Italy, was named Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili (also known as A.L.F.A.). In 1915, an entrepreneur named Nicola Romeo took control of the company, hence the “Romeo.” Alfa Romeo continued to produce cars throughout World War I and World War II, including the Alfa Romeo P2 Grand Prix and 2900B Type 35 racing cars.
The company was taken under government control in 1933, and eventually put up for sale in 1986. Ford put in an offer to purchase the company, but Fiat offered to purchase the entire company and give jobs to Italian workers — Ford didn’t. In 1986, Alfa Romeo merged with Lancia into Alfa Lancia Industriale S.p.A., which was owned by Fiat. In 2007, four new companies were created, including Alfa Romeo Automobiles S.p.A. — owned by Fiat Group Automobiles S.p.A.
You might think that FCA’s ownership stifles the distinctiveness of the Alfa Romeo vehicles However, it doesn’t matter who makes Alfa Romeo — at the end of the day, these models reflect the brand’s style, attention to detail, and power that originally put the company on the map.
Cincinnati drivers and the auto industry alike have experienced the brand’s achievements, including the release of the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio in 2017 and the Stelvio a year later. There’s nothing quite like these models on the market and their style can’t be duplicated.
