On many vehicles, paddle shifters are a feature that’s either standard or available, but what do paddle shifters do? Cincinnati drivers often ask us this question, so the Alfa Romeo of Dayton service center has decided to provide the answer. Keep reading to learn more!

What Do Paddle Shifters Do?

Usually, paddle shifters are found on sportier vehicles because they allow drivers to switch gears quickly, but what do paddle shifters do? They’re most commonly located directly behind or near the steering wheel, so that they can be easily used while driving. One paddle will bring you down a gear, and the other paddle will bring you up a gear. Each time you use a paddle, an electronic signal is sent to the clutch, and the clutch shifts a gear. It’s very easy to learn how to use paddle shifters, and they offer Dayton drivers more control. That way it’s easier to manage your RPMs better. By downshifting correctly, you can even extend the life of your brake pads using paddle shifters.

How to Use Paddle Shifters: Step by Step

If you’re driving a car equipped with paddle shifters, you should enter manual mode. This will give you full control to paddle shift. The right paddle upshifts and the left paddle downshifts, and you’ll be able to easily switch gears manually as you drive through Bellbrook. You also don’t need to worry about harming your vehicle when shifting gears either. The paddle shifters won’t change gears if:

  • You upshift before the engine reaches the lower limit of the higher gear
  • You downshift before reaching the upper limit of the lower gear
  • You press one paddle while the other is being held down
  • You press both paddles at the same time
  • You try to shift to third or higher while stationary
  • If you’d rather let the automatic transmission take over for a while, just enter D mode
