What is Regular Unleaded Gasoline?

Regular unleaded gasoline is the most customary fuel type and works just fine for most vehicles on Cincinnati roads. Regular unleaded gasoline is much better for your health and the environment than lead-based gasoline. It’s octane rating, 87, is an indication of its effectiveness in preventing improper fuel combustion.

What is Premium Gasoline?

Premium gasoline and regular gasoline share a couple of qualities in common: they’re both combustible and formed from crude oil. The two are distinct in their octane levels, however. Most premium gasoline has an octane level of 90 or above. Premium gasoline also works to keep your engine cleaner, which means less pollution.

Premium vs. Regular Gas

While premium gasoline and regular gasoline share several similarities, there are several distinctions you’ll want to bear in mind:

  • Appropriate Engine Types: Regular unleaded gasoline is best suited for engines with low compression ratios as it burns more quickly than premium gasoline. Premium gasoline is better suited for engines with high compression ratios.
  • Octane Rating: Higher octane levels mean less chance of vehicle-damaging engine knocking (also called pre-ignition). Pre-ignition is less common with premium gasoline.
  • Cost: Premium gasoline is often between 20 to 40 cents more expensive per gallon than regular unleaded gas. This can quickly become expensive if you’re often commuting around Dayton.

Not sure whether premium vs. regular gas is best for you? Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you’re traveling around Bellbrook:

  • If your vehicle doesn’t specifically require premium gasoline, it won’t necessarily improve your vehicle’s longevity or performance.
  • Using regular gasoline will not harm your vehicle, even if it requires premium gasoline. If your vehicle begins knocking when you use regular unleaded gasoline, however, you’ll want to use premium gasoline.
  • Vehicles that use turbochargers may require premium gasoline.
